Analyzing Student Data Spreadsheet

This was my first attempt ever to work with a spreadsheet.  I am thankful for the video tutorial and the very clear instructions.  Unfortunately, when it came to inserting and creating a chart, what happened on my computer screen looked very different from the tutorial.  By playing with it, I was able to figure it out.  I can see how this program can help a teacher to make sense of her students test scores and analyze student performance.  In my current teaching, I always calculate the overall average of all students on a test and take a look at how many students have A's ,B's etc.  This helps me to  better determine whether any given exam is fair and helps me also to ascertain whether students are learning the material.  I usually do this all "by hand" and the old-fashioned way.  Google sheets and charts could really save me some time and there are so many useful options in terms of formulas and charting styles.

Below is my final data sheet and chart.

The overall average of all student test scores was 191.92. The chart shows student performance on tests six through ten who scored below this overall average. From the chart it is possible to see that all students are moving in the right direction or their test scores are improving. Katherine clearly had great difficulty on Test 6. She showed dramatic improvement on Test 7. As a teacher I would want to try and figure out what made the difference for her on this exam. Did she receive tutoring or was the test designed differently? I would also want to try and figure out what is going on in class for all the students who are scoring below average, so I can help them to learn and perform better. I would be most concerned about Anais and Renee, who have the lowest test scores. I might be asking myself whether I need to change my lesson plans or how I evaluate student performance. I would most definitely talk with these two students and ask them for their feedback and perspective.

  1. Great initial effort --- you certainly smashed through the typical spread sheet barriers. Still a few items that need tweaked:
    1) what was the overall AVERAGE that you calculated to base your new data chart on? ____

    2) As per the instructions, please analyze the actual results (trends, exceptions, modifications to lesson plans, etc.
