Kristen's Bio
Hello! My name is Kristen Klay and I am a Willamette MAT student. My background is in college level German and English instruction. I taught four years of beginning and intermediate German language classes as part of my graduate studies at UC Berkeley. I also taught four years of EFL or English as a Foreign Language at the University of Göttingen and the Hochschule Harz (University of Applied Studies) in Wernigerode, Germany. I am pursuing an MAT so I can teach either German at the high school level or work helping English Language Learner students at the elementary level. My hobbies include reading, a love of poetry, my cats Lily and Fionnuala, and raising my children bilingually.

ReplyDeleteI wish I knew more German. Every other year I spend a month in the Alps hiking/climbing, and much (most) of it is in German-speaking areas. However, as you know, it's not that straight forward. When in n'ern part of Switzerland I had them call down to Zermott to make a reservation. The language barrier amongst themselves speaking the same language was incredible. I visited with an old German army cook at the same table as a Berlin family (born/raised). They could not understand each other, yet both were speaking German (high vs low). One can see the challenge of resolving this when teaching German in our US school system.
